Summary

From comedian Quinta Brunson comes a deeply personal and funny collection of essays featuring anecdotes about trying to make it when you’re broke, overcoming self-doubt and depression, and how she’s used humor to navigate her career in unusual directions。

Quinta Brunson is a master of viral Internet content: without any traditional background in media, her humorous videos were the first to break through on Instagram’s platform, receiving millions of views。 From there, Brunson’s wryly observant POV attracted the attention of BuzzFeed’s motion picture development department, leading her to produce viral videos there about topics like interracial dating, millennial malaise, and seeing your ex in public。 Now, Brunson is bringing her comedic chops to the page in She Memes Well, an earnest, laugh-out-loud collection about her weird road to Internet notoriety。

In her debut essay collection, Quinta applies her trademark humor and heart to discuss what it was like to go from student loan debt-broke to “halfway recognizable—‘don’t I know you somewhere?’” level-of-fame。 With anecdotes that range from the funny and zany—like her experience trying to find her signature hairstyle—to more grounded material about living with depression, Brunson’s voice is entirely authentic and eminently readable。 Perfect for fans of Phoebe Robinson’s You Can’t Touch My Hair Samantha Irby’s We Are Never Meeting in Real Life and Issa Rae’s The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, She Memes Well will charm and entertain a growing, engaged audience。

Loved this book of funny essays written by a woman who is herself a meme。 I learned a lot about Quinta Brunson's life as the youngest in a family of seven。 Her education was really cool and interesting, and I also enjoyed reading about how she moved from Philly to LA。 I laughed out loud at many sections, especially the explanation of how Quinta became a meme。 Yet others, discussing gun violence and police violence against Black people, were serious and thought-provoking。 A quick, smooth, and enl Loved this book of funny essays written by a woman who is herself a meme。 I learned a lot about Quinta Brunson's life as the youngest in a family of seven。 Her education was really cool and interesting, and I also enjoyed reading about how she moved from Philly to LA。 I laughed out loud at many sections, especially the explanation of how Quinta became a meme。 Yet others, discussing gun violence and police violence against Black people, were serious and thought-provoking。 A quick, smooth, and enlightening read。 。。。more

According to the author, this book took about four years to write since she was very selective about which essays to include。 The time was well worth it as each essay is unique, humorous, and relatable。 Essays cover her early years, her move to LA, and her current success。 I had never heard of Quinta before this book, but my kids had。 I was very impressed by the care she seemed to take in writing this book。 She really went above and beyond to make it meaningful and true。 As a result, I think thi According to the author, this book took about four years to write since she was very selective about which essays to include。 The time was well worth it as each essay is unique, humorous, and relatable。 Essays cover her early years, her move to LA, and her current success。 I had never heard of Quinta before this book, but my kids had。 I was very impressed by the care she seemed to take in writing this book。 She really went above and beyond to make it meaningful and true。 As a result, I think this book will be especially loved by her fans and those who have grown up with social media。 She offers some really sound and helpful advice。 。。。more

She Memes Well is a delightful mix of traditional memoir-style essays with a humorous twist。 Not every story is laugh-out-loud funny, but some definitely are。 Brunson is an expert at one-liners, so I had a few oh-so-attractive snorts here and there while reading this book。 One major thing that stood out to me is that while this book is written by a Millennial and targeted to a mainly Millennial/Gen-Z audience (I am a high school librarian and will be buying this book for my high schoolers), Brun She Memes Well is a delightful mix of traditional memoir-style essays with a humorous twist。 Not every story is laugh-out-loud funny, but some definitely are。 Brunson is an expert at one-liners, so I had a few oh-so-attractive snorts here and there while reading this book。 One major thing that stood out to me is that while this book is written by a Millennial and targeted to a mainly Millennial/Gen-Z audience (I am a high school librarian and will be buying this book for my high schoolers), Brunson does an excellent job of explaining the background of memes and other forms of social media communication。 I could give this book to my Baby Boomer parents and they’d probably develop a better understanding of meme culture。 Reminiscent of Samantha Irby (one of my favorites), Brunson’s writing is dry and witty, relatable, and thought-provoking all at once。 She discusses being raised Jehovah’s Witness, being Black in America, and being a woman with a great balance of humor and sobriety。*ARC provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Pretty solid 4 star review。 I enjoyed many of the anecdotes as a creative performer myself and found the final chapter really moving。 Highly recommend reading this even if you don’t know who Quinta is as its a fascinating book of a very interesting life lived through internet success。 I found some parts less interesting or the pacing slowed but that’s just my personal preference and opinion。 I still think it’s a great read。

I was a big fan of Quinta's work through Buzzfeed and what I've seen in various parts of the internet, so when I saw her book on the list of ARCs on #NetGalley , I definitely had to request it。 This was definitely one of those books that I enjoyed for the entertainment value, but it was also extremely introspective about serious subjects such as her relationship with her religious parents, being a black person in America, and how society interacts with each other on social media。 I enjoyed learn I was a big fan of Quinta's work through Buzzfeed and what I've seen in various parts of the internet, so when I saw her book on the list of ARCs on #NetGalley , I definitely had to request it。 This was definitely one of those books that I enjoyed for the entertainment value, but it was also extremely introspective about serious subjects such as her relationship with her religious parents, being a black person in America, and how society interacts with each other on social media。 I enjoyed learning about her life growing up and about her adult life on her way to developing her comedy career。 The only negative things I can think of are that there didn't seem to be much of an order to the chapters, and there were certain ideas that didn't feel finished。 Like I think I would have liked to have more of an idea of how her relationship with her parents is currently now that it's pretty clear she's sticking to the path she's chosen。 But overall I really enjoyed the book and I plan on searching for more of her content to watch。 And I also recommend this book to anyone that enjoys popculture, comedy, and learning about different perspectives。 。。。more
